CSUS commemorates Marsha Edington in tree planting ceremony
Friends and family of Marsha Edington, CSUS graduate program secretary, gathered on October 17th, 2024 to commemorate her life and contributions to the CSUS community in a ceremonial tree planting.
On October 17th, 2024 at 10am, friends and family of the late Marsha Edington gathered to honor life and legacy in a tree planting ceremony. Marsha Edington served as the Graduate Secretary for the Department of Community Sustainability graduate program from 2016 until 2023. Marsha began her career at Michigan State University in 1997. Marsha passed away on September 12, 2023 and was actively engaged with the graduate program and supporting students in CSUS until shortly before her passing.
CSUS Graduate Student Organization representative, Titas Dutta said of Marsha's impact on the student community, “Marsha was a wonderful person and was very dear to us graduate students. She has always supported the us through all our journeys and cheered us on! She cared about the well-being of graduate students and for those of us who have moved from distant places and countries, she always made sure to ask about families, festivities, and our well-being. Marsha was a kind, warm, and generous person who made an ever-lasting impact in the lives of many of us.”
To honor her legacy and memory, the CSUS Graduate Student Organization led an initiative to raise funds for a commemorative tree planting on campus in September of 2023. The CSUS Graduate Student Organization fulfilled their fundraising goals by end of fall 2023 and began work with campus infrastructure to plan the tree planting. With the help of Yun Cao, landscape architect, and Steve Troost, campus planner, the CSUS GSO were able to identify a location close to Marsha’s place of work and a tree species.
At the recent tree planting ceremony, an American Linden (Tilia americana) was planted near the northwest corner of the Natural Resources building, at the intersection of the Farm Lane and Wilson Rd on campus. Family and friends of Marsha gathered and shared words, poems, and stories of Marsha’s life. Finally, a commemorative plaque was installed that states Marsha's name, the tree species, and the note "Gift from Marsha's Family and Friends of the Department of Community Sustainability."
