IAT welcomes new staff

MSU's IAT is pleased to welcome Justin Kunkle as the Academic Affairs and Recruitment Coordinator beginning January 1, 2025, and Kristen Brown as the Program Coordinator at Monroe County Community College.

MSU's Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) is pleased to welcome two new members to the team. Justin Kunkle will serve as the Academic Affairs and Recruitment Coordinator beginning January 1, 2025, and Kristen Brown will serve as the Program Coordinator at Monroe County Community College.

Justin Kunkle is an accomplished academic leader in the field of forestry, currently serving as the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Academic Advisor at Michigan State University's Department of Forestry. With a PhD in Forestry from MSU, he has significantly contributed to enhancing undergraduate education through innovative program development, including new Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) certificate programs in Forest Technology and Urban Forest Management. His efforts have led to a remarkable 40% increase in undergraduate enrollment in the forestry major since 2016, showcasing his commitment to student recruitment and success.

Dr. Kunkle is dedicated to promoting an accessible and inclusive academic environment. He has successfully secured funding for various initiatives to support underrepresented students in forestry and natural resources. His collaborative approach is evident in his partnerships with community organizations and educational institutions, which aim to create pathways for traditionally underserved groups. With a strong focus on experiential learning and active student engagement, Dr. Kunkle is poised to make valuable contributions to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources community.

Kristen Brown is a dedicated professional with extensive experience in operations oversight, project management, and community engagement. As the co-owner of K&B Plants, she effectively manages greenhouse operations while fostering strong partnerships with local growers. Her role as Administrative Director at Crossroads Community Church highlights her leadership skills, where she coordinates a team of over 75 volunteers and develops engaging curriculum for children. Additionally, Kristen has served as General Manager at SGP Management, overseeing property management and client relations. A proud Michigan State University alumna with dual degrees in Communications Advertising and Business Marketing, she is committed to positively impacting the MSU CANR IAT community through her diverse skill set and passion for service.
