Michigan State University hosts dry bean and sugar beet virtual field day

Online webinar updated growers and agribusiness industry on current research and outreach

Michigan State University (MSU) AgBioResearch and Extension hosted a virtual field day highlighting dry bean and sugarbeet research August 19 from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m.

"Michigan’s dry bean growers continue to look for efficient, cost-effective ways to maximize the potential of their land. The MSU Virtual Field Day affords them an opportunity to continue to learn and improve their respective operations," said Joe Cramer, executive director of the Michigan Bean Commission. "We appreciate Michigan State University’s effort to make this knowledge available during these unprecedented times."

Subjects covered included

  • Organic dry bean production
  • Dry bean end use quality
  • Dry bean breeding
  • Dry bean variety development
  • Weed control
  • Sugarbeet root and foliar diseases
  • Sugarbeet cyst nematode
  • Nutrient management

The first half of the event focused on dry beans, and the second half will focused sugarbeets. Each presentation lasted approximately 10 minutes, including time for Q&A.

The following researchers and Extension specialists presented:

"This virtual field day was excellent opportunity to see the dry bean and sugarbeet research being done by the experts at MSU,” said Bublitz.  “The presentations provided useful information that can be applied to farm operations." 

This event counted for two restricted use pesticide (RUP) credits and two certified crop adviser (CCA) credits.
