Webinar 1: Forests and Carbon in the eastern US: An introduction to forest carbon trends and policies

Presenter: Chad Papa, Michigan State University

Dates / Time: December 7th, 2023, 3:00 PM EST

Description: This talk provided a broad overview of regional trends in forest carbon within the eastern region of the US. The talk provided an introduction in trends in forests in terms of forest cover, ownership, and current and past policies of management including descriptions of forest cover types and their regional significance along with drivers of forest change and how they alter forest structure and function overtime. Lastly, the talk briefly covered regional forest markets and economics and how they relate to forest carbon.

Webinar 2: Climate change impacts on the eastern forests: Implications for forest carbon dynamics

Presenter: Chad Papa, Michigan State University

Dates / Time: February 6th, 2024,3:00 PM

Description: This talk provided a broad overview of regional climate trends in the eastern US. Providing a brief analysis of projected future changes in temperature, precipitation, and seasonality to understand and assess potential implications of changing and extreme weather patterns on forest dynamics. Lastly, this talk will summarize key vulnerabilities of regional forests to climate change

Webinar 3: Threats and vulnerabilities to forests in the eastern US under climate change

Presenters: Chad Papa, Michigan State University

Dr. Steve Matthews, Ohio State University

Dates / Time: March 21st 2024, 3:00 PM EST

Description: This talk built on subregional trends related to forests, including key features and vulnerabilities and potential carbon implications. Additionally, this talk analyzed major threats to individual forest type groups and evaluate species-specific vulnerabilities utilizing the USFS Climate Change Tree Atlas. Finally, this talk further explored future projections of species suitability, adaptability, and potential management outcomes under a changing climate.

Webinar 4: Adaptive Management: Concerns and tactics regarding forest adaptation

Presenter: Patricia Leopold, State, Private, and Tribal Forestry, Forest Service, Eastern Region and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science

Dates / Time: May 2nd 2024, 3:00 PM EST

Description: This presentation discussed planning and considerations for effective mitigation relating to carbon stewardship and other ecological and economic concerns for forest management. This presentation continued to explore regional concerns for carbon sequestration and storage while assessing tradeoffs of goals. Finally, this presentation assisted in identifying actions for strategies and approaches for carbon management highlighting specific case-studies from the eastern US.
