Blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are the Summer 2018 featured food. Blackberries have a short fruiting season and fruit in June and July. Raspeberries have a slightly longer fruiting season and typically fruit from July to September. Strawberry fruiting occurs in different patterns from late spring to fall, according to the variety. June-bearing strawberries fruit in late spring and early summer while Everbearing strawberries fruit two or three times a year from late spring to fall and Day-neutral strawberries from continuously from late spring to fall.
These berries are high in antioxidants, in addition to vitamin C, potassium and fiber, which means they help prevent cellular damage, diseases and aging. They are commonly used in juices, desserts, cereal, yogurt, smoothies, quick-breads and salads.
