The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources community to attend the Jr MANRRS Leadership Symposium.

CANR will be hosting the inaugural symposium from March 8-10, 2024. The purpose of the Jr. MANRRS symposium is to expose 7th-12th graders to the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences sector. The symposium is a great recruitment tool for our college. The youth will have the opportunity to network with their peers and collegiate MANRRS members from MSU, the University of Kentucky, and Langston University, learn about the programs in CANR and support resources at MSU, attend interactive workshops, and participate in contests!

1:00-1:45 PM Workshop Session #1: 

  • MSU MANRRS, Rm N103

Title: Exploring Agriculture and Natural Resources Beyond Farming

Description: This workshop will introduce Jr. MANRRS Symposium attendees to the breadth of educational opportunities that exist in agriculture and natural resources beyond farming. The Michigan State MANRRS chapter will explore three topics in group rotations over the course of the workshop. The first topic will discuss entomophagy and the sustainability impact of the foods we choose to consume. The second topic will introduce tree aging and teach participants how to determine growth by examining tree cores. The third topic will cover skull identification to gain a better understand of the diversity that exists among mammal body structure. Our workshop will conclude with highlighting this is only a small component of agriculture and natural resources to encourage students to explore careers and develop their interests.

Description: Leadership is the ability to lead and build a team!!  This session will explore team building through interactive hands-on activities that will strengthen participants leadership skills, communication and adaptability.  Join this session to learn more about how to lead a group from any position within the team!

Title: Top 10 Interview Tips

Description: Interviews are a part of many aspects of life- not just for jobs! Come learn ten interview tips to prepare you for your next interview and leave ready for a successful experience

  • Title: Candid Conversation-Collegiate Days - MSU, UK and Langston students, Rm N106

Description: In this session you will hear from collegiate students as they discuss their experiences on their respective campuses and the transition from high school to college.

 

  • Roxanne Turner, rm N103

Title: Leadership Styles

Description: Leadership styles impact the outcomes of group dynamics!!!!  Through hands-on activities, learn about leadership styles, how it impacts groups and which style to use depending on the situation, time available and group members’ skills.  Participants will also learn about their own individual style, styles they prefer to follow and what skills are needed to be situational leaders.  

 

  • University of Kentucky MANRRS workshop, rm N105

            Title: Self-leadership: Preparing for the Next Season of Your Life

             Description: This session will prepare you to navigate major transitions in your life. Whether it be a new semester in high school or transitioning from middle school, you will leave having your strengths identified and the skills to leverage them to reach your goals.

  • National MANRRS Ian Smith -Workshop

Title: Preparation on Developing a Jr MANRRS Chapter

Description: This workshop will focus on establishing a baseline to recruit, retain and engage the next generation of Agriculture students. This workshop will help advisors feel more confident, comfortable and motivated in equipping the next generation to the lead the charge. 

2:40- 3:25 PM Workshop Session #3

Title: Making a Connection in 1 Minute or Less

Description: Did you know that you make a great first impression in 1 minute or less with a great elevator pitch? If the moment arose, are you prepared for pitch yourself, your business, or an important cause? Join this session to learn what a 30-second pitch is and areas in life where you can use one. Prepare your perfect pitch and leave ready to make a positive impact.

 

  • Langston MANRRS Workshop, Rm N103:

Title: Active Leadership & Agriculture Career Pathways

Description: This engaging presentation is designed to address important innovative "Leadership Traits" such as: accountability, adaptability, confidence, creativity, communication, and listening/empathy, along with team-building skills. This presentation will also address current Agriculture Career Pathways.  This is an interactive presentation designed to engage symposium participants. 

  • Jeno Rivera- CANR Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT), Rm N105

Title: BINGO- Exploring Agriculture and Natural Resources Career Pathways

Description: This is an interactive session that encourages participation to learn more about agriculture and natural resources (ANR) through the age-old game of BINGO. Participants will become familiarized with the importance of agriculture and natural resources and how it is embedded in their everyday lives. They will learn about various pathways to pursue a career in ANR.
